Webinar: Advancing Road Weather Management Using Clarus Data

ITS Professional Capacity Building Program partners announce availability of courses:

National Highway Institute, FHWA

The National Highway Institute (NHI) at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) partners with the USDOT's ITS Professional Capacity Building Program to develop training on ITS topics. We have been notified that NHI course prices will rise slightly in 2010, but if a course is requested by December 31, 2009, you can pay 2009 prices, even for courses that will occur in 2010.

Anyone interested in NHI training may enroll. NHI courses are designed for industry professionals working with Federal, State, and local transportation agencies and officials. For more information, visit the NHI Web site.

Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE)

Build your skills and expand your knowledge thru CITE's upcoming blended course offerings:

Principles and Tools for Road Weather Management - October 23 thru December 11, 2009 - This course provides transportation professionals in highway maintenance and/or highway operations with training to develop tools and strategies for addressing road weather problems. Participants are exposed to various strategies for addressing road weather problems, including Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) and the development of crosscutting decision support systems to respond effectively to weather situations. More information can be found here: http://www.citeconsortium.org/courses/RoadWeatherMgmt_Blended.html

Introduction to Systems Engineering — October 23 thru December 11, 2009 — This course is an introduction to systems engineering for ITS project managers and project staff. The goal of this course is to allow individuals to understand the benefits of applying systems engineering approaches as a means of developing quality systems. The course covers technical practices such as modeling, prototyping, trade-off analysis and testing, and management practices such as risk assessment and mitigation, which make up "best practices" in the systems engineering arena. More information can be found here: http://www.citeconsortium.org/courses/SE101-blended.html.

If you are interested in taking either of these courses, please contact Denise Twisdale (301-403-4592) or Kathy Frankle (410-414-2925). All course materials are on-line but students have access to course instructors through three pre-scheduled conference calls.

ITS Strategic Planning Workshop: June 4, 2009

The ITS Joint Program Office and its modal partners are hosting a workshop at the ITS America Annual Meeting at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, to engage stakeholders in their strategic planning effort.

The goal of the workshop is to elicit discussion on the vision and direction for ITS research for the next five years and beyond. Specifically, the Department seeks input and insights into a proposed set of goals and objectives for the ITS Program. Additionally, the Department is interested in exploring new opportunities for research and development, technology transfer, and evaluation of next generation ITS technologies.

The workshop is designed to present the results-to-date of the strategic planning effort and to invite discussion from the public. Participants will be offered the opportunity for question and answer exchanges as well as engaged in break-out sessions. Feedback will be captured and incorporated into the ITS strategic planning effort.

Using this input, the Department expects to be able to develop a research agenda that reflects the critical role of advanced technologies in achieving transformative change in the areas of safety, mobility, environmental stewardship, and deployment policy; and to develop a Strategic Plan that reflects the current and future needs of the ITS industry.

Time: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center (Room number will be sent out as soon as it is available.)
