Intelligent Transportation Systems
Transportation Training Online

The Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE) will offer the following courses in "blended" format.

Federal sources of ITS learning:

"Blended" courses combine the best features of both instructor-led and web-based instruction.
These features include:

Flexible, Accessible, Interactive
  • Live discussions with the instructor through the use of conference calls,
  • Convenient, flexible web-based learning,
  • A specific time schedule in which to complete the course, and
  • Interaction with other students through the use of class problems posted on a discussion board.

Managing High Technology Projects in Transportation provides public and private sector professionals with an understanding of the principles for managing high technology projects. The course describes the necessary steps for successful project completion, including planning, analysis, design, implementation and testing. It also discusses procurement techniques, staffing requirements, cost estimation and methods for project control. The course emphasizes the differences between project management for high technology projects and the procedures typically used for construction projects.

Introduction to Systems Engineering provides an overview of systems engineering for transportation applications. The course presents system engineering tools and techniques, and covers all phases in the project life cycle from vision through development, design, operations, and maintenance. It’s designed for professionals at all levels of government, and in the private sector, who are involved in advanced transportation.

The instructor for both courses is Mac Lister, FHWA. Mac has worked for more than 25 years as an IT manager, including 12 years in a public transit agency. He is a Certified NHI instructor who specializes in ITS software acquisition, national ITS architecture, and systems engineering. His expertise includes Intelligent Transportation Systems ITS Tech / Overall. Mac has assisted numerous local governments and nonprofit institutions with projects — presented/facilitated a meeting for Iowa Division with Des Moines MPO to start regional architecture development; developed and delivered a 2-day safety and ITS course/workshop for Wisconsin DOT and the Wisconsin Division. Currently, he provides training, outreach, and technical support for FHWA’s national ITS architecture, serving as team leader for that effort’s National Field Support Team. These courses have been available as a classroom course through the National Highway Institute and converted to a web-based version in an effort to reach out to those students unable to attend the classroom course. The content is the same, only the course presentation is different. Managing High Technology Projects in Transportation will begin on September 19, 2008 and continue thru October 27, 2008; Introduction to Systems Engineering will begin on October 31, 2008 and continue thru December 8, 2008. Cost is $250.00 each; $400 for both.
